Google just changed the User Interface for Hangouts.

The most important change of the user interface is a partially black background. As a general rule, images , both still and animated (videos) show better inside a black frame.
The challenge of this new user interface is to improve the quality of visualization for the videos, while representing a coherent integration with everything else where the light backgrounds (white or grey) are commonly used, including in Hangouts own sub-menus (which are left grey) and apps (which are also left unchanged).
Time and users will tell if this change in the user interface, which may be perceived as a bit radical is appreciated or not.
Today’s announcement includes an impressive list of enhancements for Google+ and even Hangouts chat (not video chats), the only one which applies to Business Hangouts users, is an improvement of the video in a back-lighting situation:
